Part of the American-Oriental Banking Corporation, the American-Oriental Bank of Szechuan (AOBS) was set up in 1921 with an authorized capital of one million gold dollars and acted as the major foreign exchange and deposit bank for western China. The bank’s Chinese partners bought it out in 1932 at which time it became a wholly Chinese institution.
