Details

Struck using a middle state of the same reverse die as the 30-grain Kagin-1 dollar, the Kagin-2 is the earliest gold dollar struck to the 20-carat/28-grain per dollar standard adopted by Christopher Bechtler, Sr., in late 1834. The location of the “28.G.” weight suggests that Bechtler may have intended to include the fineness on these early dollars. This variety was probably struck for less than a year and appears infrequently at auction. Approximately 20 examples are known, with a handful of pieces in mint state, with the reeded edge. The plain edge is rare with just a couple known.
