(1831) C. Bechtler $2.50 Gold MS No 75 GR, Finely Beaded Reverse, K-5 Values

Details

The Kagin-5 is one of three varieties of Beaded Border quarter eagle struck before the addition of the weight onto Bechtler’s dies at the end of 1831. This variety’s obverse and reverse dies appear to have been manufactured using the earliest state seen for the punches used to make beaded border dies, suggesting that the variety is from the initial emission of coins from the Bechtler family. Fewer than ten examples are known, seven of which are available to collectors. Most Kagin-5 quarter eagles are graded XF or AU with a single mint state specimen as finest known.

Obverse: 2 50. 20.C. GOLD.NORTH CAROLINA (encircled by 63 beads)

Reverse: RUTHERFORD C.BECHTLER , ASSAYER, (encircled by 79 beads)
