The Patterns (1831) series of Pattern Coinage in the U.S. Coins contains 1 distinct entries.
History and Overview
Listed as a pattern for this date is an 1831 striking from regular quarter eagle dies, but in silver rather than gold. Apparently, one or more of these were struck in the same date as on the coin. It has been suggested that this may be a “mint error,” struck on a silver dime planchet. If so, it is unlikely to have escaped from the Mint as a ten-cent piece.
Collecting Perspective
The silver quarter eagle of 1831, J-49, is unique.
