On 14 November 1889, the Banco Occidental (Western Bank) was founded as the nation’s third bank by French investor Leon Dreyfus and Colombian doctor and coffee grower Dr. Emilio Álvarez Lalinde with 500,000 pesos in capital. The bank’s president was American banker Benjamin Bloom, whose printed signature appears at lower center front on all notes issued by the Banco Occidental.
