1918-D Nickel MS Values
Details
The 1918-D Buffalo nickel is a scarce Denver-mint issue, along the lines in scarceness with several of the other early mintmarked Buffalo nickels. With a mintage of 8,362,000, the 1918-D is decidedly difficult to find in any grade. Even circulated examples represent a certain challenge, though the in uncirculated grades and especially gem the coin is genuinely scarce. The only MS67 example graded by a top-tier TPG is one slabbed by PCGS, while MS66 specimens number around a few dozen.
Obverse: James Earle Fraser's famous and simple design depicts a Native American chief with the word LIBERTY from 1-2 o'clock. The date is placed on the lower left of the chieftain's bust.
Reverse: A full portrait of the bison, Black Diamond, with the words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA at the top periphery with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM just underneath. The denomination FIVE CENTS is spelled out at the bottom. For the Type 1, the denomination is embossed on a flat surface.
