1913-D Buffalo Nickel, Type 1 MS Values

Details

The 1913-D Type 1 Buffalo nickel was struck to the tune of 5,337,000 pieces. Bearing a design in which the bison on the reverse stands on a mound, the 1913-D Type 1 Buffalo nickel is relatively scarce and is sought after as a first-year, one-year only type coin. Examples are somewhat easy to locate through the Gem Uncirculated grades, though it is a decidedly tough coin in MS67 and rare in MS68, with the latter claiming only 3 known PCGS-slabbed examples.

Obverse: James Earle Fraser's famous and simple design depicts a Native American chief with the word LIBERTY from 1-2 o'clock. The date is placed on the lower left of the chieftain's bust.

Reverse: A full portrait of the bison, Black Diamond, with the words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA at the top periphery with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM just underneath. The denomination FIVE CENTS is spelled out at the bottom. For the Type 1, the denomination is embossed on raised ground.
