Values / U.S. Coins / Nickels

Five-cent coins, or nickels, were first issued by the United States in 1866 to replace the silver-based "half dimes" which were struck until 1873, so there was an overlap as the both types of coinage were duplicating the need for a 5-cent piece in circulation. Nickels are still an important part of today's commerce and the Jefferson nickel is widely circulated.
