On 1 August 1943, Burma was declared independent of Japan and on 17 August, Dr. Ba Maw, a pre-war prime minister under the British, was installed as adipadi (head of state). On 15 January 1944, the Ba Maw “puppet” government established the Burma State Bank (BSB).
