The upper serif of the S mintmark is thicker/heavier than the lower serif. Inverted S mintmarks—a byproduct of the hand-made nature of working dies in this era—are known among several U.S. coin denominations and types, including Lincoln cents, Mercury dimes, and Standing Liberty and Washington quarters. This Philippines version from 1918 is a popular and valuable die variety.

Reverse Description

An eagle is portrayed in the center atop an American shield with 13 stars. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is written around the periphery with the date at the bottom.
