On 5 July 1975, Cape Verde declared independence from Portugal. On 29 September 1975, the Banco de Cabo Verde (Bank of Cape Verde, BCV) was founded with the exclusive right to issue banknotes in Cape Verde. The bank commenced business on 1 July 1976, merging the local branches of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino and the Banco de Fomento.
