The 1943-S bronze cent is a transitional rarity that was struck under the presumed condition that a few bronze planchets from the 1942 run of Lincoln cents were left behind in mint hoppers and accidentally struck with 1943 dies. All 1943-S bronze cents are extremely rare and highly sought after by a variety of collectors, including Lincoln cent enthusiasts.
On the rare occasion 1943-S bronze cents are offered for sale, they generally take well more than $150,000. In 2016, a PCGS AU58BN specimen crossed the block for $282,000.
Obverse: Bust of Abraham Lincoln framed by IN GOD WE TRUST on the top periphery. The word LIBERTY to the left of the portrait and the date and mintmark (If any) positioned on the right side.
Reverse: Wheat ears flanking the words ONE CENT, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM on the top perimeter.
