Details

1869 Dime. Experimental piece intended to test a silver alloy substituting one part nickel, for the one part copper used in regular coinage of the era. Composition of “silver-nickel” pieces may vary, not yet studied by modern numismatists; elemental analysis is required; only standard nickel alloy (75% copper, 25% nickel) pieces are known of light color.

Obverse: Regular Liberty Seated die without date (as also used for J-331 of 1863 and elsewhere).

Reverse: Inscription SIL. 9 / NIC. 1 / 1869.
