Hand-engraved (not struck) piece with incuse lettering and inscriptions, made by Longacre to test the diameter and concept. Not a coin in the regular sense. Square hole at center. • Analysis of certain of the gold issues reveals them to range widely, from 50% to 100% fine.

Obverse: Hand-engraved with 1. DOLLAR. 1849, and stars.

Reverse: Hand engraved with U. STATES OF AMERICA and wreath.
