1849 Moffat & Co. 10 Dollar Gold MS TEN D., K-5 Values

Details

The 1849 $10 Moffat “TEN D.” appears to be the last variety of eagle struck by Moffat & Company in 1849. The obverse die — shared with both the Kagin-6 and Kagin-6a Moffat & Company $10s — is in its latest die state and is paired with a new reverse that reads “TEN D.” at the bottom. Many Kagin-5 $10s are weakly struck in the centers due to obverse die bulging. There are somewhere between 50 and 60 examples known, 17 of which were recovered from the S.S. Central America. A single proof example is known in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution and traces its provenance to the Mint Cabinet collection. The Kagin-5a “Large Letters Reverse” variety has not been confirmed and most likely does not exist.

Obverse: Liberty Head with MOFFAT & Co on diadem 1849 thirteen stars around.

Reverse: Federal Eagle S.M.V. CALIFORNIA GOLD. TEN D.
