Strategic Ammunition Hill Location on Latest Jerusalem of Gold Coin Series

The Bank of Israel’s Jerusalem of Gold series highlights historic sites and landmarks in the city of Jerusalem captured in pure gold. The 16th bullion-strike coins in the series are dedicated to Ammunition Hill, which has become a stark symbol of the heroism of the soldiers and their courageous fight, as well as the very battle that has come to represent the Six Day War which occurred on the morning of the 5th June 1967.

In 1967, the Jordanian army opened fire along the demarcated city line in Jerusalem at night on the 5th June and into the morning hours of the next day. Battalion 66 of the IDF Paratroopers Brigade attacked Ammunition Hill in defense in a tough face-to-face battle, considered one of the most heroic battles in the entire war.

Over the years, the site has become the central memorial site of the further battles for the reunification of Jerusalem. At the site, a Hall of Remembrance has been established, and its walls bear the names of 182 soldiers who fell in the Six Day War, in the battle for Jerusalem, among them, 36 Israel Defence Force soldiers who fell on Ammunition Hill.

Today, the site also includes a museum, a sound and light show and restored combat trenches which has become an important information centre for pupils, IDF soldiers past and present and visitors from Israel and all over the globe.

The coins are produced by the Holy Land Mint at their facilities in Nesher, Haifa on behalf of the Bank of Israel and designed by Lilach Rosman. Featured on the obverse is a view of the twisting trenches on Ammunition Hill that have been preserved and is a silent testimony of the fierce fighting that took place there. Beside the trenches is an olive tree, symbolic of the olive trees that were planted on the Hill in memory of the fallen. Along the upper rim is the word JERUSALEM in Hebrew, English, and Arabic. The denomination of the coins is shown with the numeral 20 placed in the centre of the primary design with the text NEW SHEKELS shown in Hebrew, English and Arabic along with the year 2026 in English and Hebrew. Below the depiction of Ammunition Hill and along the lower rim are the coins’ specifications 1 OZ FINE GOLD .9999 in English and Hebrew. The Star of David mintmark is shown above the coins’ specifications. The reverse, common to all coins in the series, is designed by Meir Eshel and depicts a stylised Lion of Megiddo with its accentuated curved tail. The loin motif is based on an ancient 8th century B.C. seal excavated in Megiddo (Armageddon) in the Jordan Valley that belonged to Shema, servant of King Jeroboam II.  Above the lion is the Israel State Emblem and below is the text ISRAEL in English, Hebrew and Arabic.

The Season of Summer on New Silver and Colour Proof Coins

The Swiss Mint launches a new four-coin series featuring the Four Seasons and commencing with Summer.  The four seasons are clearly distinct and divide the year into four periods, defined by astronomical, calendared or climatic characteristics.

Summer, which occurs during June to August in the northern hemisphere, is a very welcome change in Switzerland. People enjoy long, sun-drenched days with temperatures averaging 18C to 28C (64F to 82F). In terms of tourism, the summer season is the most popular time to visit with activities at their peak and which includes the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival which takes place in July or, Swiss National Day, celebrated across the entire country on the 1st August with parades, traditional folk music and massive fireworks displays.

The first coin highlights summer, which is the focal point of the coin’s obverse design. Depicted is a stylised image of the sun with world map showing the northern half of Africa, all of Europe and a portion of Asia. The letter N at the edge of the sun is shown slightly off-centre denoting the position of the planet during the summer months. To the lower left of the sun is the constellation typical of summer, known as the ‘Summer Triangle’ and clearly visible during the time of the year. Near the upper right rim is the word Estate the Italian word for summer and shown in a scripted style. Near the left rim are the words giugno | luglio | agosto also the Italian names for the months of June, July and August. The Proof strikes include a vivid golden yellow colour applied to the sun. The reverse design, which is shared on all of the coins in the series, focuses on the four seasons depicted and featuring a stylised floral cycle during the year. The plants representing summer are raised and polished, appearing in full bloom. Around the rim of the coin are the inscriptions CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA and the year 2026 along with the mint mark B for Swiss Mint in Berne. Below the primary design is the coin’s denomination of 20 FR. Both coins include the raised edge inscription in Latin DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT (The Lord will provide) along with thirteen five-pointed stars.

Silver Commemorative Coins Honours Industrious Ecological Insect Partner

The Philatelic and Numismatics Division of San Marino have released a product with an ecological theme. Though one of Europe’s smallest countries, its honey industry is considerable. Centred on sustainable beekeeping, production focuses on local biodiversity which results in yielding raw, single-flower and wildflower - millefiori honeys along with pollen, royal jelly and propolis.

None of this activity could be possible without a particular insect partner known as the Apis mellifera, or the humble the honey bee. As such, the bee colonies of the diverse, mountainous terrain allow various species of both wild and honey bees to forage from a wide array of flora, including the famous linden or, tilia trees that line the streets and valleys of the microstate.

The reproduction of a vast number of plants depends on the valuable work of these industrious insects, which therefore contribute to the stability of ecosystems, their continued conservation and biodiversity. Although San Marino is not a fully-fledged EU member state, their honey industry harmonises its apiculture and bee health conditions with European Union veterinary and organic standards.

The silver BU quality coins are produced by the Istituto Poligrafico Zecca della Stato – IPZS at their facilities in Rome on behalf of the Banca Centrale della Repubblica di San Marino and designed by Chiara Principe. The obverse features a stylised composition of the three towers of San Marino using honeycomb shapes as a design feature. Also shown are three honeybees pollenating both the towers and stylised flowers. Along the upper right rim is the text REPUBBLICA DE SAN MARINO. The reverse side depicts a composition design comprised of a stylised honeycomb and in the centre, a flower with a stationary honey bee while pollenating the flower and gathering nectar. Below the larger bee, a smaller one is shown on a stylised flower in a honeycomb cell. Three honeycomb cells also contain stylised flowers along with the letters A P I meaning bee. In one honeycomb cell is the year of issue, 2026 and just under the flower’s petals is the denomination 5 EURO along with a small R mintmark denoting the Mint of Rome.
