Treasury officials revealed that the planned mission to resupply the International Space Station will also carry a quantity of 2026 coins as part of the payload.
During the “Minting the American Spirit: Celebrating the Nation’s Semiquincentennial” event held May 8 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum (former home of the New Orleans Mint), U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach told the gathering, “We’re going to be doing something Tuesday that’s very special. We’re going to be sending some of our coins into space.”
No specific details were available, but Beach expressed hope that the mission would include an opportunity to have the coins photographed with planet earth in the background.
The launch is scheduled to take place at 7:16 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12. According the NASA launch schedule, the mission “brings supplies and payloads, including critical materials to directly support science and research investigations that occur onboard the orbiting laboratory.”
