The measures, S. 4051 and H.R. 2257, were placed in their respective chambers on March 11 and assigned to committee for review.

Under the measures, the program would call for gold $5, silver dollar and clad half dollar coins to be sold with the surcharges from the sale benefitting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, based in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The foundation’s location features the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, a seven-foot stone monument constructed in 1981 with an eternal flame that symbolizes the spirit of all firefighters. Plaques surround the monument, listing the names of men and women who died in service to their communities since 1981.

"The bravery and selflessness of firefighters who risk their lives responding to emergencies in communities across our nation cannot be overstated," said Senator Susan Collins of Maine, who sponsored the Senate measure. "When firefighters make the ultimate sacrifice, the loss is felt by families, fellow firefighters, and entire communities. This commemorative coin program would honor those who gave their lives in service of others while supporting the important work of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the families they serve."

If passed, the program would be implemented for a one-year period beginning on January 1, 2029. Other measures proposed for 2029 include programs honoring Rosa Parks, Selena and U.S. Foreign Service.
